Le Comte Ory
Count Ory – Opera in Two Acts
All the men join the Crusades to the Holy Land and go to war. All of them? No – a few good-for-nothings have other plans. The lonely ladies, who have sworn chastity until their husbands’ safe return, become the object of desire for the lustful Count and his companions.
But is Countess Adele, who has renounced her love for the young Isolier during this difficult time for her brother’s sake, so naive that she does not recognize the libertine in his clumsy disguise as a pious hermit or later as a pilgrim woman? Believe that who will! Director Jochen Schönleber certainly has his doubts. The composer initially brilliantly used the quickly withdrawn music from Il viaggio a Reims for this comedy, but the highlight is the wonderful trio in the second act, which leads to an unexpected erotic confusion between two men (one of whom is sung by mezzo-soprano Diana Haller) and the beloved lady. This is perhaps the most beautiful scenic musical number by the composer. Our performances are conducted by Music Director Antonino Fogliani, who conducted the opera many years ago in Paris.
